Our Ancient kefir is, without a doubt, the very best dairy drink currently made in the Netherlands. This is the Kefir as it was traditionally made: by fermenting raw milk using kefir grains (popularly called 'the kefir plant') instead of powdered kefir cultures. Our Ancient kefir has been optimized by Koen as a graduation project within our company. Raw Milk Company is, as far as we know, the only company in the EU that makes kefir from raw milk with the kefir plant as the starting culture. In Eastern Europe (where the kefir grains come from) the use of the kefir grains is more common, but pasteurized milk is used there.

Because our Ancient kefir is made from raw milk, it retains all the good properties of raw milk. But due to the fermentation process, it has a much longer shelf life and has even more advantages:


Milk naturally contains vitamin K2. Fermented full-fat dairy, including ancient kefir, contains much more of this fat-soluble vitamin K2 than low-fat or semi-skimmed Kefir. Vitamin K2 plays an important role in calcium metabolism. It ensures that calcium gets to the right places in the body, such as the bones and teeth.


The fermentation time of our Ancient kefir is 36 hours. As a result, people with a lactose intolerance can often tolerate this drink, because the enzyme lactase has not broken down by heating, and this enzyme can break down the lactose (milk sugar).

The kefir organisms also break down some of the nutrients present in milk, such as lactose and milk proteins, making it easier to digest. The micro-organisms make a range of B vitamins and vitamin K2. Together with the vitamins A, D and K2 that are naturally found in milk, this means an almost complete package of vitamins. Fermentation of milk also increases the tryptophan content. This amino acid is, among other things, the raw material of serotonin, a happiness hormone, which in turn is the precursor of the sleep hormone melatonin.


Finally, the microorganisms in Ancient kefir make a unique type of dietary fiber called kefiran. This is where gut bacteria thrive.


The ideal storage temperature for our products is 4 degrees Celsius. The PET bottle is free from BPA and phthalates.
